Hail to the Victors

With the best fight song in the land (Notre Dame, a close second) playing loudly and maize and blue confetti fluttering softly to the turf, Michigan celebrated its Sugar Bowl victory last night.

But the celebration was more about a return to glory rather than a single victory, thanks in large part to first-year coach Brady Hoke.

Brendan Gibbons hit a 37-yard field goal in overtime to lift No. 13 Michigan over No. 17 Virginia Tech, 23-20, at the Superdome.

The Wolverines finished the season 11-2. In its previous three seasons under coach Rich Rodriguez, Michigan was 15-22.

Speaking of a return to glory: Fordham (7-6) knocked off No. 22 Harvard, 60-54, last night at the Rose Hill Gym.

The win was the first for the Rams over a ranked team since a 68-67 victory over then-No. 24 St. John’s at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 9, 2000. It was also Fordham’s first victory against a Top 25 team at Rose Hill Gym since beating No. 19 Georgetown 63-59 on Feb. 26, 1978.

Sitting in New Jersey this morning and hearing the results of last night’s Iowa caucuses: Can’t help but believe Gov. Chris Christie’s grand strategy is to take the White House, himself, in four years.

Christie is a sharp politician. Does he really think that any of the Republican candidates, including his man Mitt Romney, will beat President Obama in November? And that after four more years of this, the country won’t be aching to go in a new direction? In steps Christie, the man who fixed New Jersey of all places, some say. The governor would be 54 in 2016, still a young man in political circles.

Off the cuff review: “Young Adult” has received generally favorable reviews, but the dark comedy left my film correspondent with a neutral feeling. The script left too many loose ends and did not deliver at the finish, but Charlize Theron was terrific in the lead role, she said. This one sounds like it’s for Charlize Theron fans only, and that’s not so terrible.

  1. Charlize Theron’s a great actress. The way she explores the various roles and expresses the deep sentiments of the charachter, always keeps me on the edge of my seat. Kinda like Cheryl Ladd in the classic TV sitcom ‘Charleis Angels’. I’ll have to check this movie out.
