Super Bowl XLVI. It’s In The Stars

I made my Super Bowl pick on Jan. 13, right here on this blog and at njnewsroom.com. That’s correct. The pick was made just prior to the divisional playoff round and 25 days before Super Bowl XLVI.

Back then, I picked the Giants to beat the Patriots, 35-28. I see no reason to retreat from that prediction now, but I am getting a little nervous about it. More about that later.

To be precise, my pick wasn’t really a prediction. I just set out the most probable scenario that concluded with the Giants winning their fourth Super Bowl as a franchise. And the Giants and fate have followed suit … so far.

To refresh everyone’s memory, I had the Giants upsetting the Packers in Green Bay and the 49ers beating the Saints in San Francisco. Then I picked the Giants to knock off the second-seeded 49ers the following week, setting up a rematch of Super Bowl XLII with New England – my pick to come out of the AFC.

A personal note: My daughter Meg attends York College in Pennsylvania, not far from the Maryland border. Ravens country. Aware of my apparent “psychic” run on the NFL playoffs, she pressed me for a score just prior to the AFC championship game. I told her the Patriots would win, 16-14. I called her afterward to apologize for having got the score wrong. The Patriots won, but the score was 17-14.

Needless to say, I have a good feeling about the Giants’ chances today. But it makes me nervous when I hear that the Giants’ website proclaimed the Giants Super Bowl XLVI champions a day before the game (perhaps by someone who bought into my Jan. 13 post).

The web page was taken down quickly, but the damage had been done. The news was all around Indianapolis. It’s not that I’m superstitious or anything, but this prognostication streak did happen to begin on Friday the 13th.  I’m just saying …
